Business and Technical Writing in Action: Rewriting for Clarity and Confidence

Written by:

I’m currently taking a Coursera course called Business and Technical Writing, and one of the most valuable takeaways has been learning how to structure my writing for busy, skeptical readers. The course teaches strategies like the pyramid principle (main message first) and the SCQA technique (Situation, Complication, Question, Answer), both of which help you write with clarity, confidence, and charisma.

To apply what I’ve learned, I took a welcome paragraph from our CData Sync partner training course and gave it a rewrite. Below, you’ll find the before and after versions, along with a short explanation of how the changes reflect good business writing principles.

📝 Before: Original Course Welcome Message

After: Revised Using Pyramid and SCQA Techniques

Welcome to Your Sync Success Journey

This course will give you the knowledge and confidence to sell and support CData Sync effectively. Whether you’re new to Sync or expanding your expertise, you’ll leave equipped to communicate its value, solve customer problems, and drive real business results.

The Challenge: Sync’s powerful features offer immense potential—but only if you know how to explain, position, and support them.

The Question: How can you turn product knowledge into confident conversations and successful outcomes?

The Answer: By mastering both core concepts and advanced techniques through this comprehensive training.

You’ll gain the tools to:

  • Confidently explain Sync’s capabilities to customers
  • Provide effective, informed support
  • Build trust and credibility in every conversation
  • Strengthen your sales performance and outcomes

Let’s unlock the full potential of Sync—together.

💡 Reflection: From Dense to Dynamic

The original message was sincere and well-meaning—but it buried the main point and asked the reader to work a bit too hard. The revised version applies three key lessons from my course:

  • Top-down pyramid writing: Lead with the takeaway.
  • SCQA structure: Frame the reader’s challenge and solution clearly.
  • Skimmable formatting: Bullet points, headers, and short paragraphs make the message easy to absorb.

These principles don’t just make writing clearer—they also show respect for your reader’s time.

I look forward to applying more of these techniques in my writing, both in training materials and across my work.
